First Days in Africa

I arrived safely in South Africa yesterday and am getting adjusted to the new time zone and my new surroundings. I have to admit that I felt a little uneasy when I first stepped off the plane into a country where the only people I knew I had never actually met in person. But once I met Janis and David, the directors of the orphanage, and their daughter Hope, I felt much better.

Last night we stopped for dinner outside Johannesburg (the city where my plane landed) and then made the hour and 45 minute drive to the city of Rustenburg. By the time we arrived at the orphanage, it was dark and I was feeling completely worn out after my long day and night of traveling.

I am living in a small apartment (here they call it a flat) on the property. I didn't really know what to expect since accommodations on missions are not usually the greatest. But it's really nice! I have a small living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, and two bedrooms. It's small, but very nice.

Probably the funniest thing about my flat is the kitchen, which is fully equipped for gourmet cooking. I told Janis today that I walk in there and feel intimidated. The most complicated thing I've cooked to date is an omelet or maybe some break-and-bake cookies. It's just sad. Hopefully I will figure out a few more things while I'm here.

Today I didn't really have a set schedule since I am still recuperating from the jet lag. I slept great last night, but still feel pretty tired today. Janis gave me the full tour of the property including the baby room, the toddler room, and the main house where 5 older kids live. I have loved getting to spend some time with the kids today. They are so much fun! The babies call me "mama" which I kind of love. I know it's going to be so hard to leave here in August. I am starting to get attached to these kids already, and it's only day one.

This afternoon I rode with Janis to pick up the kids from school. They were hoping I would be able to help with shuttling kids around this summer, but since they drive on the left side of the road AND all the cars are stick shift, I'm thinking that may not happen. I feel like I could probably master one or the other, but both might be pushing it.

Tonight I ate dinner with Janis and David and their two younger children Hope and Daniel. They are aware of my kitchen struggles and took pity on me. We had potato soup with mixed fruit on the side. They are taking such great care of me. I'm so grateful that they live right next door to me on the grounds.

Well, I think that's all for now. I hope all is well back in the States! I miss you all very much!!
